A new allele of peptidase-B in cattle Braz. J. Genet.
Electrophoretic analyses of peptidase-B were carried out on red cell hemolysates from Holstein, Mantiqueira and Gyr cattle, using cornstarch, known in Brazil as Penetrose-30. We describe a new peptidase-B allele, denoted Pep-B1, in Mantiqueira cattle, belonging to the Bos taurus group, which are the result of a cross of native cattle of Portuguese origin introduced in Brazil during colonial times (16th century) with Holstein and Caracu cattle. The genetic control of peptidase-B was determined by typing parents and progeny segregating for all three alleles, confirming that peptidase B is controlled by a single autosomal locus with three codominant alleles, denoted Pep-B1, Pep-B2 and Pep-B3 The use of the citrate-phosphate buffer system, at pH 5.9, on 14%...

A new brain metalloendopeptidase which degrades the Alzheimer ß-amyloid 1-40 peptide producing soluble fragments without neurotoxic effects BJMBR
Carvalho,K.M.; França,M.S.F.; Camarão,G.C.; Ruchon,A.F..
A new metalloendopeptidase was purified to apparent homogeneity from a homogenate of normal human brain using successive steps of chromatography on DEAE-Trisacryl, hydroxylapatite and Sephacryl S-200. The purified enzyme cleaved the Gly33-Leu34 bond of the 25-35 neurotoxic sequence of the Alzheimer ß-amyloid 1-40 peptide producing soluble fragments without neurotoxic effects. This enzyme activity was only inhibited by divalent cation chelators such as EDTA, EGTA and o-phenanthroline (1 mM) and was insensitive to phosphoramidon and captopril (1 µM concentration), specific inhibitors of neutral endopeptidase (EC 3.4.24.11) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (EC 3.4.15.1), respectively. The high affinity of this human brain endopeptidase for ß-amyloid 1-40...

A new genus of the family Pontocyprididae (Crustacea, Ostracoda) from the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with the description of two new species OMA
Wouters, K..
A new pontocypridid genus, Peripontocypris gen. nov. and two new species are described from the Maldive Islands, Papua New Guinea and from Easter Island. The new genus has a remarkable set of characters, which are unknown in other members of the family: six adductor muscle scars, a Y-shaped Zenker's organ and a large furca. Some other characters of the valves and the soft parts are reminiscent of different pontocypridid genera, and suggest a mosaic type of evolution. The affinities of Peripontocypris with other genera, and its taxonomic position are discussed.

A new species of Gastrosaccus (Crustacea, Mysidacea) from beaches in Madagascar OMA
Wooldridge, T.; Mees, J.; Webb, P..
Gastrosaccus madagascariensis sp.nov. is common in the surfzone of sandy beaches along the east and south coasts of Madagascar. Morphologically, it is characterised by having seven lateral spines along each side of the telson; with spines 2-4 and the penultimate spine being dorso-lateral in origin. One or two spinules are interspersed between the fifth and terminal spines. The fourth exopod segment of pleopod 3 in the male is bulbous, bearing two terminal barbed unequal spines. A robust and naked seta is also present on the same segment in the male.

A new species of Parthenope Weber (Crustacea: Brachyura: Parthenopidae) from the Pacifc coast of Mexico OMA
Hendrickx, M.E.; Landa-Jaime, V..
A new species of Parthenopidae from the East Pacific belonging to the genus Parthenope Weber is described and illustrated. Parthenope johngarthi n. sp. was collected along the west coast of Mexico, off the coast of Jalisco and Colima. Parthenope johngarthi is readily distinguished from species of other genera of Parthenopidae from the East Pacific by the shape of the tuberculate carapace, the relative lenght and shape of the chelipeds, and the shape and relative size of segments of walking legs. It is closely related to P. exilipes (Rathbun, 1893) but differs from the latter by its slender and almost smooth walking legs, its slender and less densely tuberculate chelipeds, and by...

A new species of Namanereis (Polychaeta: Nereididae: Namanereidinae) in groundwater of the sultanate of Oman, Arabian peninsula Naturalis
Glasby, Christopher J..
A new species of namanereid polychaete, Namanereis araps n. sp., is described from groundwater of the Sultanate of Oman. It occurs in fresh groundwater of natural springs, man-made water channels (falaj) and dry stream beds (wadis) in recently uplifted limestone areas of the south-eastern Arabian peninsula. This is the first species of Namanereis recorded from the coast of the northern Indian Ocean. Namanereis araps n. sp. most closely resembles the Caribbean species Namanereis hummelincki (Augener, 1933).

A NONPARAMETRIC ANALYSIS OF EFFICIENCY FOR A SAMPLE OF KANSAS BEEF COW FARMS AgEcon
Featherstone, Allen M.; Langemeier, Michael R.; Ismet, Mohammad.
Competitive pressures in the cow-calf sector increased in 1995 because of a decline of 27% in calf prices. Technical, allocative, and scale efficiency measures were used to examine the competitiveness of a sample of Kansas beef cow farms. On average, the farms were 78% technically efficient, 81% allocatively efficient, and 95% scale efficient. Enterprise profitability was correlated positively with the efficiency measures. Inefficiency was related to herd size and degree of specialization. Producers should focus on using capital, feed, and labor more efficiently rather that increasing their size. Increased concentration of the cow-calf sector will not result in large cost savings given the current technology.

A Note on Price Information in Commodity Markets with Evidence from the Cotton Market AgEcon
Hudson, Darren; Ethridge, Don E.; Segarra, Eduardo.
Theory and analysis of price information and its importance have typically assumed that the information is correct. Additionally, most analyses have centered on general price information assuming homogeneous products. This paper examines the implications of incorrect price information on the basis of quality, with evidence from prior research on cotton prices used as an illustration. Results of a conceptual analysis indicate that quality has direct implications on the production and marketing process. Incorrect information on prices of different quality leads to distortions in the market and market inefficiency.

A novel polymorphism in the coding region of the vasopressin type 2 receptor gene BJMBR
Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is a rare disease characterized by renal inability to respond properly to arginine vasopressin due to mutations in the vasopressin type 2 receptor (V2(R)) gene in affected kindreds. In most kindreds thus far reported, the mode of inheritance follows an X chromosome-linked recessive pattern although autosomal-dominant and autosomal-recessive modes of inheritance have also been described. Studies demonstrating mutations in the V2(R) gene in affected kindreds that modify the receptor structure, resulting in a dys- or nonfunctional receptor have been described, but phenotypically indistinguishable NDI patients with a structurally normal V2(R) gene have also been reported. In the present study, we analyzed exon 3 of the...
